Renee Maria Osubu

The SHOTS and David Reviews-featured debutant who has had her first short film featured at Sundance - Renee, who is Nigerian-English and London-based seems to be one of the most exciting directorial finds of the past few years. Her first film Dear Philadelphia, is an arresting and beautiful portrait of fatherhood and forgiveness, set in the most divided state in America. Renee is also an outstanding photographer, winning the BJP Portrait of Britain Award in 2019, the Davis Peace Project Award, and the Michael Wilson Award.

The Fridman Sisters

Maira & Lina Fridman are fast-becoming one of the must-work-with names in town. With their background in production design their work has been compared to the likes of Sacred Egg & Los Perez and, more recently Kim Gehrig. They’re super young (28/29), super fresh and endlessly interesting. They won at YDA for their female empowering Nike commercial which they shot with W+K SP.

TwinTaoers

Another YDA-winning family duo, Chinese-American twin brothers Aaron & Winston Tao are one of the most unique performance directors in town. Winning at YDA 2 years in a row for their heartbreaking films about global social justice issues. Their work is underpinned by the idea that “Cinema should be use to better mankind."

Emily Maye

Another outstanding female director, who is picking up projects left right and centre. And, indeed a talent that should catch the eye of Adidas creatives at IRIS - Emily is a sports director with a really unique way of approaching her craft, taking a much more poetic approach than the usual high-octane, in-your-face sporting film-language we have become used to. She has been recognised at 1.4 for her beautifully languid Nike film which she shot with W+K Portland. You can read about her approach to “Shooting Men” on Shots here.

The Apiary

One half of this devastating duo is Lily Coates. The Apiary are one of the most exciting and singular directing duos in town, creating highly-affecting filmic worlds through a combination of visual ASMR, stunning choreography and intricate sound design.

*I didn’t want to leave these guys out on the basis that they are only half female, since Lily is such an inspiring woman, so talented and a real creative force to be reckoned with. Their work deserves big recognition.

The Edelmanns

YET another family duo. In this case, uniquely a mother and son team, made up of Director//Photographer Florence Edelmann and her DOP son, Pierre. Again the reason I am including this team is that Florence is definitively the creative lead, and another complete boss. They have been one of our busiest directors during lockdown, not least for the convenience of having a cinematographer who lives with the director but with their extensive home-studio set up meaning they can shoot remotely with great ease. Even bringing in Dad as the First AD on a string of VCCP shoots last year ; )

Andrew Gooi

The Man with the most appropriate food-director name EVER. Gooi is originally from Malaysia and currently resides in LA. He is a crafter of beautiful, original food stories, where the creator takes centre stage. He has won multiple awards including the prestigious James Beard Award.
