Remote multi-destination shoots obviously require a huge amount of planning but also a significant degree of faith in the chosen methodology. Having coordinated shoots like this before (see KNORR Case Study + ‘HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN’ lockdown project), we have extensive learnings in this field. The key is a central hub for the production. A production HQ leading the way on all talent sourcing, production planning, team coordination, creative control, agency communication and asset delivery. To ensure creative consistency across the multiple shoots, we would devise a template that could be replicated across the globe. As we did with the KNORR project, we would suggest shooting the London leg first. This would be used as a blueprint for the whole campaign. Armed with the confidence in a template that everyone has signed off on - including the structure, look & feel, tone of voice, length, etc - our remote teams could then apply the same approach in every destination across the world. With a limited budget and no agency or client attendance, the shoots would consequently be more controllable and consistent in their output.

We would propose a single Lead Director to curate the campaign. An experienced filmmaker who can coordinate the creative planning & results and ensure a unified aesthetic for the entire suite of films. They may also take on the task of shooting several of the initial batch of cities themselves. The other filmmakers would be a combination of similar directors equipped to travel to multiple locations - covering several shoots on one well-planned trip - and a broader team of directors who would be already based on the ground in each location. With an eye on the need to limit air travel to a minimum, we would rely as heavily as possible on sourcing local contributors. This would have added advantages for speed, efficiency, cultural knowhow, language & time management. Each ‘unit’ would probably be comprised of director-photographer / camera assistant / fixer. Where needed, and with budget permitting, they may also draft in additional support (drivers, sound recordist, location manager etc). In most cases, a core team of 3-4 people would hopefully suffice though. Footage would be uploaded remotely to a central editing HQ in London. The off-lines would be cut by a team of editors working in the same time zone and able to respond to the Lead Director’s and agency’s feedback, ensuring optimum efficiency for both the schedule & budget.

Obviously any proposal like this is flexible and can be adjusted to the project once we know more about the creative intentions and deliverables. But creating a roadmap that can be rolled out efficiently across the planet is absolutely critical. We would be excited to partner with Grey to pull this exciting project together and look forward to discussing it further.
